Information and Education at the Point of Sale

Give buyers clear actions before purchase, at delivery, and when an organism cannot be kept.

Education is strongest when it appears at the decision point. A general awareness page cannot correct a parcel that is already open beside a storm drain.

Before purchase

State the organism identity, expected adult size and care needs, included water or substrate, destination limits, and the rule against release. Make required permits or buyer qualifications visible before checkout.

At delivery

Provide instructions for safe unpacking, water and packing-material management, cleaning equipment, and reporting a wrong or suspect organism. The instructions must fit the actual package. Avoid vague language such as “dispose responsibly” when a live organism or contaminated water is involved.

When ownership cannot continue

Give lawful alternatives such as return, surrender, or help from a qualified local organization. Tell the buyer not to release an organism or pour aquarium or pond contents into natural waters or drains that reach them.

Test whether the message works

Ask a person who did not write the instructions to find the species name, no-release rule, unpacking steps, and help contact. Track repeated questions and incidents. Change the content when the evidence shows that a step is unclear.
